Empowering Climate Action: Highlights from our virtual training for Grievance Redress Mechanisms
The IRM recently concluded its 4-week virtual capacity building workshop, aimed at enhancing the capacity of grievance redress mechanisms (GRMs) of GCF direct access entities (DAEs) in Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia and the Pacific. The workshop, held from 20 September to 17 October, allowed participants to follow the IRM's online training module on GRMs and join live sessions with other participants and accountability experts.
The workshop covered useful background knowledge about the history of GRMs, requirements and principles of an effective mechanism, the basics of problem solving processes and compliance review, as well as practical information about handling cases and learning lessons from other GRMs.
“The course allowed me to quickly gain a solid understanding of many foundational concepts and processes necessary for operationalising and maintaining an effective Grievance Redress Mechanism." - Roshelle Sparman-Small, Young Professional, Office of Integrity, Compliance and Accountability, Caribbean Development Bank
The core sessions were led by Mia Corpus, a highly experienced professional with a diverse background in conflict resolution, coaching, and program management and previous experience with the accountability mechanisms of the GCF, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and the International Finance Corporation (IFC). They also featured interventions from accountability experts, including Lalanath de Silva, Managing Director of Transparentem, Sushma Kotagiri, Information and Complaints Officer at the British International Investment, Christine Reddell, Case and Policy Specialist at the Social and Environmental Compliance Unit of UNDP and Nandia Batsaikhan, Dispute Resolution Specialist at the Office of the Compliance Advisor Ombudsman of the IFC.
"This training was a mind and eye-opener. I especially appreciated that in every module, the training reinforced the fundamental principles that guide proper GRM practices. The training has helped clarify many areas of doubt that I held and has emphasised that we learn and improve incrementally." - Elisha St. Luce, Gender and Stakeholder Specialist at Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre
Upon successful completion of the online modules and live workshop sessions, participants receive a course certificate signed by the Head of the IRM.
