For many individuals adversely affected by development projects, grievance redress and accountability mechanisms serve as vital channels for raising concerns and seeking remedy. These mechanisms ensure that the voices of impacted communities are heard and their grievances adequately addressed.

Civil society organizations (CSOs) play an essential role in the grievance process. They raise awareness about grievance mechanisms, provide support to affected communities in navigating the complaint process, and advocate for fair resolutions. CSOs also contribute to strengthening accountability by ensuring transparency and monitoring the implementation of remedial actions.

In this 13th webinar of the GRAM partnership, we will explore the grievance redress process from the perspective of social society. The discussion will focus on how CSOs view issues around accessibility, process, retaliation and remedy as well as overall engagement with grievance redress and accountability mechanisms to achieve effective and just outcomes. Panelists include:

  • Preksha Kumar, Registrar & Case Officer, Independent Redress Mechanism
  • Prabindra Shakya, Founder/Director, Community Empowerment and Social Justice Network (CEMSOJ)
  • Rayyan Hassan, Executive Director, NGO Forum on ADB
  • Tala Batangan, Coalition for Human Rights in Development
  • Tunga Rai, Director, Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) Climate Change Partnership Program
  • Peter Carlson, Communications Officer, Independent Redress Mechanism (Moderator)
